Declaration of Disaster Psychiatry Section of the WPA about Disaster in Brazil

DISASTER PSYCHIATRY SECTION

Buenos Aires, January 29, 2013.

Faced with the tragic event that occurred in the Disco “Kiss”, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where 238 young people were killed and more than a hundred have been left with serious consequences, we express our sorrow and our solidarity with all the people of Brazil, and especially with our colleagues of the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry.

We make available to colleagues and authorities that require our services, have specially trained teams in the intervention and disaster reconstruction.

The centralized organization and immediate actions to develop, is a central issue in view of the proper recovery of the injured and families of the victims.

Psychological harm, they are not fully visible at first, should be treated to prevent the development of long-term damage, which are crippling for those that suffer.

For monitoring of those affected, we have the development of a single, centralized medical record, on line, enabling over time to monitor the evolution and complications of each individual case, allowing action for immediate correction and refund normal living conditions of each person. It is a complex scientific and technical development and used in our intervention in “Cromagnón” tragedy, in Buenos Aires, which occurred in December 2004, with characteristics similar to those in this event.

Reiterating our solidarity with the Brazilian people and the ABP fellow psychiatrists, we remain at your disposal for assistance.
